Artist's Comments

I know, I know. It's a bad scan. It was too large for my tiny home scanner so you only have about half of the drawing on here anyway.

It is Syal Antilles in her actress persona 'Wynssa Starflare' from the SW fandom. Hooray!

2b graphite, bristol board

EDIT: Okay, so now that I've slept, I'm beginning to see all of the faults. For one thing, she has man-hands, for another: all of her facial features are too small for the size of her head. Combine those faults with that massive jaw and it leaves me with the distinct and slightly nauseating realization that I've drawn the love-child of Reese Witherspoon and Jay Leno.

I don't think the features are too small for the face, I just think they're all scrunched up together. And I didn't notice the man hands until you noticed them. :-P

Also, I'm jealous of your ability to draw hair. I think that's my current nemesis.

Oh, pretty!! The first thing that I saw were her beautiful eyes and that FANTASTIC hair--a HUGE WOW on those!! Gorgeous shading and tone, gorgeous depth! I actually don't think you need to do much to adjust this for proportion, Z: just pull her right cheek in a touch with some shading (the hair can stay as it is), and narrow out the jawline a little bit and that would pretty much take care of it (in other words, instead of changing the features, just put them onto a little smaller face!). Geez, what a great expression! This is Reese Witherspoon, right? I knew it right away, so great job with her likeness! As to the "man-hand," the only thing I would change would be her little finger--it's the only one I can see that's a little too large--the rest seem fine to me. I can't get over how fast your portraiture is progressing! Man, it's so great! Don't go overboard on changing this--there's very little that's wrong, and it really doesn't detract from the overall "wonderfulness" of this piece!

Hair is tough just because it is so tedious. I got half way through this and just - lost interest. I was bored silly. If you look closely, you can see where I gave up the ghost.

I am a terrible person for not replying to this sooner, esp when your comments encouraged me so much while I was bemoaning the faults in this piece. I came to the conclusion that your analysis was dead-on as soon as Sara colored it for me. A little color was all it took to 'fix' most of the faults! I think the best part was that you knew who it was right away.

I can't thank you enough for telling me about graphites and bristol board. I sat the entire evening I worked on this hopping up and down in my chair muttering and exclaiming about how well it blended! I was like a kid in a candy shop. Took my long enough to mess around on bristol in earnest, though, huh? Geez.

Ha! :D We all get busy and put things off--no worries! ;) And I'm so glad you like the Bristol (I'm working on some right now with some wonderful new 4B and 6B art pencils I just got... I lurve them!!)--it's been a boon to me since I heard about it from Aurelia over in the Fan Art forum! Blend away, and be sure to post up the results! :D

Tch, your discription is hilarious! XD man-hands? I think they look just fine. At least you don't draw all your people with Woman fingers...including men..
