Artist's Comments

There are some faces that I don't seem to 'get' and I guess my own is one of them. I find it very hard to draw a realistic portrait of myself (and my oldest son, for that matter), though this one comes closer to reality than most.

We see our own faces in the mirror every single day of our lives, and I think that's why self-portraits are so hard: there's so much "pre-conception" about our own appearance that it's almost impossible to simply draw what we actually see.... That's my theory, anyway! That said, I love this piece! The sort of coy gaze, just over the glasses rims, the beautiful colors, the soft half-smile--all just lovely! You're really getting good at the colored pencils, too, Z--very pretty blending and shading, good depth and highlighting! It's wonderful! :D

That... makes a lot of sense. I really do have a difficult time drawing those I see most often. The colored pencils are a matter of time only. Well, time and forcing myself to study with them instead of the safety of my beloved charcoals (or even the graphites!).

Thanks for looking, FF. For the record, no one who sees this portrait thinks it looks like me in any aspect other than the eyes.
